If you have enjoyed Anne Greenwood Brown's Lies Beneath and Deep Betrayal, you need to read the last of the trilogy, Promise Bound. While it still focuses on both Lily and Calder, this is truly Calder's story.

A lot has changed since last summer. Lily Hancock has developed into a half mermaid; Calder White broke his bond with his two remaining sisters; and Lily's dad, Jason, has come to except all that goes with being a merman. When Calder's sisters, Parvati and Maris, return for the summer, Parvati brings her infant son, which causes a power struggle between the sisters. Lily gets stuck in the middle of it, but there are more pressing matters weighing on her mind.

The pendant she has from Nadia, her father's mother, is causing her to dream of the past. After many sleepless nights, Lily realizes that Nadia wants Calder to reunite with his birth mother. Forcing him to go takes a toll on their relationship, but Lily knows Calder must find his family and Calder is promise bound to Lily to do so.

Everything comes to a head in Promise Bound, and Brown has plenty of surprises in store. She does an excellent job of turning events in unexpected ways, making the pages fly by. Both Lily and Calder are as strong as ever, but the reader really gets to know Calder this time around, both his past and present selves.

Promise Bound is an exciting end to a fun trilogy that shows mermaids are not the stuff of fairy tales. I am eager to see what Anne Greenwood Brown turns her hand to next.
