Charlie Harris and his rescued Maine coon cat Diesel have returned to Charlie's home town of Athena. He is a librarian and Diesel is a well-known visitor to the local library. Charlie loves books. A library is surely his most favorite spot in the world.

But not at the moment. It's National Library Week and an event has been planned to honor a previously well-known author of children's books, Electra Barnes Cartwright, on her centenary birthday.

Imagine his surprise to learn she is still alive and vibrant. Charlie and Diesel pay Electra a visit to ask if she would appear at the library on her birthday. This is where things to wrong.

Turns out there are collectors who have vast numbers of her Veronica Thane series, including those printed in foreign countries, and who are always looking for copies missing from their very valuable collections. One of the librarians is murdered. Why? Who? What possible reason would anyone kill such a lovely and kind woman? Charlie and Diesel, while not officially qualified to investigate a murder, do some sleuthing of their own.

The Silence of the Library is a delightful book with many twists and turns in the plot. I liked Charlie and especially liked his cat. Diesel is a character in his own right. He does everything but talk.
