Boston Detective D.D. Warren had decided to revisit a crime scene after hours and in the dark. All she remembers now is a voice whispering in her ear an old nursery rhyme, rock a bye baby. They found her at the bottom of the stairs with a severely injured arm and a weapon that had been discharged three times. D.D. won't be working any time soon - all she has left are nightmares.

D.D.'s therapist is Dr. Adeline Glen, a woman who specializes in teaching how to deal with pain. The odd thing about this is that the Doctor herself has a very rare genetic disorder that causes her never to feel any pain. Glen also has a few skeletons in her closet. Her biological father was an infamous serial killer who died forty years before. Her older sister murdered her first victim when she was fourteen years old and has remained in prison for thirty years.

Six weeks after D.D.'s accident, another woman's body is found in her bedroom with the same M.O. as the first victim - the killer left a single red rose and a bottle of champagne. So a serial killer is on the loose and the only witness is D.D. who can't remember a single detail. And D.D. is now a target. Even though she can't do her job officially, she needs to hunt the killer down because in the end only one of them will be left standing.

This gripping psychological thriller won't let go even after you have put the book down. Lisa Gardner gives it her all in this delightfully creepy read. It will put shivers down your spine every time you think about it and you will think about it for a while. Her characters are multi dimensional and she keeps you guessing as you try to piece the puzzle together. Lisa Gardner's thrillers always leave me wondering how she comes up with her ideas and where her next book will take us.
