He applies different 'what if?' setups to these mysteries. And this time it's a doozy! After Second Circuit Court of Appeals nominee, Judge Daniel Brennan, is found murdered in his driveway, a tip sends New Jersey detective Luke Somers after a suspect in the killing, druggie Steven Gallagher. Steven is armed and Luke is forced to shoot him - he's lauded for his action. But it also gives him a very dangerous enemy, the man's brother, Chris Gallagher, member of an elite Marine Force Recon unit. Chris decides to punish Luke by forcing him to prove Steven's innocence (of which he is convinced), with Luke's own brother's life at stake. Luke has a complicated relationship with his brother Bryan's wife Julie. It's she who calls to tell him that Bryan is missing.
