I am always glad to have another mystery by Jane Tesh cross my desk. She is consistently fresh and new and provides an enjoyable read with characters who carry a good story.

In A Bad Reputation, private investigator Madeline Maclin wants to believe that her husband has reformed his con man ways and is dedicated to staying legitimate. She and her husband, Jerry Fairweather, have moved to her home town of Celosia. His reputation has preceded him and a resident of Celosia approaches him to conduct a séance for her. Apparently her sister has died without revealing where some money might have been left. Jerry promises that this is the last séance he will hold.

Wanting to believe him is hard considering his track record. To make matters worse, an old partner of his in the con game appears and wants him to help her pull off another illegal con. To heighten the atmosphere, a wealthy man who planned to open an art gallery in little Celosia is found murdered behind the future gallery. All the small time artists in Celosia mourn his loss because they felt the gallery would give them a chance to display their work and thus gain a name for themselves.

This is a delightful as well as intriguing addition to the Madeline Maclin series.
