Steven Axelrod's Nantucket Sawbuck is one of the best mysteries I read in 2013. The writing is sharp and crisp. At times the protagonist (Chief of Police Henry Kennis) takes the time to explore thoughts he just can't get off his mind. Kennis doesn't preach to readers but expounds on his own theories. These ponderings are worth reading and considering for yourself. And you'll discover just what a Nantucket Sawbuck is. Wouldn't mind a few of my own.

For a bonus, there is a great story about a not so very nice man who is murdered. I challenge you to pick out the killer. Chief Kennis has to be very careful whom he interrogates. This killing takes place on one of America's most exclusive resort locations and most of the residents are big shots who have lots of important connections. His job could be at stake if he crosses the wrong person.

The State Police, because this is such a high profile case, step in to assist. I like that the Staties and Kennis seem to work together instead of each trying to make the other look incompetent. After everyone seems to be satisfied that they have arrested the right person, Kennis just can't let go of a niggling thought in his mind. And, voila, a surprise ending!
