One is pretty, spiteful and spoiled rotten by their father, the other appears plain and mousy. This is her way of shielding herself from the hurt she feels when her father ignores her, and the hurt she sees others suffer when her sister 'steals'her friends and spits them out when she's done. Everything changes when their father dies, stipulating in his will that they travel from their hometown of Haverhill, Massachusetts to stay with their Aunt Kathleen on a small ranch in Texas. Amanda (little Miss Pretty) has other plans: she will straight away marry one of her boyfriends and live off her inheritance. However, dear father further stipulates that they should have the blessing of their Aunt when deciding on a life partner. Amanda and Marian (the mousy twin) travel with their servant to Texas, by boat, train, stagecoach, and wagon - with several adventures along the way. Once they are 'out west' Amanda decides she hates the life, but Marian falls in love with not only the wide-open vistas, but also the heir to the largest ranch in that area of Texas. Unfortunately, due to many misunderstandings, Marian does not feel that these feelings are reciprocated. Johanna Lindsey keeps the pace going in a very enjoyable read; light, easy summer reading, with an element of romance and a slightly unexpected ending. Both Amanda and her twin Marian grow up through the book, and Aunt Kathleen (a widow who also suffered at her brother's hands when he only spent time with her twin - who would die early) has her own romantic involvement.
