And like the last couple of episodes, it shines the spotlight on gifted barrister Oliver Rathbone, whose wife Margaret has become his worst enemy since he failed to defend her father in Acceptable Loss, despite the man's guilt. Margaret's father avenged himself on Oliver by giving him a set of very dangerous photographs, ones that show high society members acting as pedophiles. Oliver soiled himself by using one of these images to prevent a grave injustice in A Sunless Sea. His decision to do so once more, now that he is a newly appointed judge, gets him into very serious trouble in Blind Justice. Though River Police Commander William Monk and his strong-willed wife Hester disagree with Oliver's choice, they have his back as always - especially since it was Hester who initiated the legal action that led to his reckless decision. It was against a charismatic London preacher who used undue pressure to obtain charitable donations from his parishioners and kept those funds for his own use. When the preacher's conviction leads to an apparent murder/suicide, Oliver is arrested and jailed for 'perverting the course of justice'. Since he did actually do what he is accused of, there seems little hope. But his father finds a talented lawyer, Rufus Brancaster, to take his case. And Monk and Hester do their own digging, which shines a new light on events. Oliver's career as a judge was a short one. We wonder what he will do next and look forward to finding out in the next book in this agreeable and thought provoking series.
