He can present his thoughts or philosophies in his stories as part of the whole. The readers find themselves going back over these gems of wisdom to see how they can be used in their own lives. And this does not in the least break up the flow of the story. Now Smith has presented us with another of his 44 Scotland Street novels. Bertie Plays the Blues is a surefire winner. Without a doubt, an erudite masterpiece. We again meet Matthew and Elspeth arriving home with their just-born triplets. Their names are a wonder. But Matthew doesn't help with his big blunder. Antonia, after a trip to Italy, has made a life-changing decision. Angus and Domenica, newly engaged, must decide which flat they will live in – Angus's or Domenica's. We mustn't forget Cyril, Angus's loyal dog. How will Domenica handle him? Big Lou has determined she needs a beau! And then there is Bertie, and his domineering mother. How does he try to solve his dilemma? He loves his mother but can't stand her stance over every facet of his life. Smith writes with grace and compassion as well as a big helping of charming wit.
