Edit, her mother, dies beneath the wheels of an elevated train. While told her mother's death was an accident, Ildiko believes she was pushed! Why would someone do that? As the number of years mount, Ildiko feels the pull of Hungary to discover who her mother was. In teen years, Ildiko treated her mother as most teens do - just someone there to take care of her, have meals ready, and always ready to fight with her. Now that her mother is gone, she realizes she never really knew her. She must go to Hungary. Her mother and grandmother lived in the Russian-occupied city of Budapest. Once there, she learns the story of Evike and her mother who in 1956 during the Revolution fought the Russian domination together, creeping into battle zones to help freedom fighters using whatever weapons came to hand. What did that story have to do with her life? The horrendous brutalities were exacerbated by the knowledge that the UN and other European countries did not help in any way. Ildiko learns of her mother's past – too late to tell her she was very proud of her. I found the story of the 1956 Revolution, while extremely interesting, also hard to read. The feeling of not belonging in your own city. Secrets that must never be disclosed. Hard to live a life not knowing if you will have a life to live. And trying to learn forgiveness. Triptych is a very powerful story. And one not to forget lest we repeat it!
