Miles Waddell has a dream. He wants to build an astronomy-based theme park on his New Mexican ranch. He has inherited $300 million and so has the wherewithal to realize his dream.

Some locals are not sure just what he is going to do and rumors fly. They feel he has no right to disturb the ecological makeup of the land, whether he owns it or not. When two eco-terrorists try to cut off the electrical supply to the not yet built park, an unforeseen accident kills one of the terrorists.

This is where ex-sheriff William Gastner comes on the scene. He has retired but still feels the call of his old profession. A cop is murdered in a traffic stop and Will feels the two occurrences are related. When he assists Sgt. Jackie Tabor in another traffic stop, he is forced to discharge his weapon (which he carries legally) and so is under investigation.

NightZone by Steven F. Havill is a wonder of a book. We have Will and Miles and the police as well as a buckshot riddled man and one dead man. There are plans for a park that will attract hordes of tourists and folk who don't approve of the whole venture. How can this be resolved?

As if that weren't enough to keep readers on their toes, Havill throws in the depiction of a concert featuring two musical prodigies. I defy anyone to write more beautifully than he does here. I could almost hear the sounds of the piano and flute and was very sorry I couldn't.

NightZone is the 19th novel in this Posadas County Mystery Series. Havill has become an old friend in my home.
