fter her missionary husband's death, Jana Bibi has moved to Hamara Nagar, a small town in the Indian Himalayas. It is 1961 and she augments her small income telling fortunes. The tourists seem to like knowing what their futures might be and that is okay with Jana. She's happy to oblige. She lives with Mr. Ganguly – or should I say, Mr. Ganguly lives with her. He is a black-ring-necked parrot and has a mind of his own. Also a vocabulary. He is well-known in the village and he often rides on Jana's shoulder when she walks to the bazaar.
S
cots-born Jana loves her life and her small village. She has faithful Mary who has worked for Jana even before moving and her life is more than tolerable. She does wonder though if love is possible once again for a fifty-nine year-old widow. (I'd be glad to talk to her about that.) Abinath of Abinath's Apothecary has created what he calls
Love Potion Number 10
. LPN10 has other properties than encouraging love. It goes well with any number of mixers!
T
he main problem at the moment in this delightful tale is that there has been a rash of kidnapping of animals to be sold in the markets. Two attempts have been made to snitch Mr. Gugaly, which has the whole village in an uproar.
L
ove Potion Number 10
is absolutely charming. Not to be missed. And not to be mixed up with
Slumdog Millionaire
or the
Marigold Hotel
movie. This book stands on its own. If you need a soothing and entertaining novel to while away a few hours in the sun, pick up a copy. I was entranced and I'm sure you will be also.
