Bones of the Lost: A Temperance Brennan Novel    by Kathy Reichs Order:  USA  Can Scribner, 2013 (2013) Hardcover, CD, e-Book     Reviewed by Hilary Williamson Bones of the Lost follows Bones Are Forever as the sixteenth entry in Kathy Reichs' deservedly popular series, starring forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan, who typically shares her time between Charlotte, North Carolina and Montreal, Quebec, working in both locations. But she heads even farther afield this time to Afghanistan, where she hopes to spend a little time with her daughter Katy - the latter enlisted after the death of her boyfriend. Why Afghanistan? Her ex, Pete (who has been pressing her to sign divorce papers), asks for a favor for a friend, whose nephew, U.S. Marine John Gross, is accused of murdering unarmed civilians. So Tempe flies to Bagram to examine exhumed bodies and find out how they died. Before she leaves the country though, Tempe is deeply embroiled in another case, the hit and run death of a teenage Latina girl. Old school homicide detective Erskine Skinny assumes the girl was 'an illegal turning tricks' and is disinclined to give her death priority. But Tempe is passionate about seeking justice for the young woman and pushes him hard to dig deeper. She also does her own investigating, rushing recklessly into danger as she often does. Good thing she's good at multitasking as Tempe's also asked to assess Peruvian mummified dog remains, this time by Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (illegal importation of antiquities is a crime). How does this come together? A photo slipped to Tempe in Bagram helps her to a surprising resolution. As usual she's undeterred by threats and personal peril. And where's blue-eyed Detective Andrew Ryan in all this? Dealing with an extreme personal crisis. He does have a walk-on part at the end, tantalizing readers for what will surely come next.
