Zen of Wonder: Hatter M #4    by Frank Beddor, Liz Cavalier & Sami Makkonen Order:  USA  Can Automatic Pictures, 2013 (2013) Hardcover     Reviewed by Ricki Marking-Camuto This fourth volume of the Hatter M graphic novel series, Zen of Wonder, takes on a more Asian flare than the first three, as Frank Beddor and Liz Cavalier take the reader on a journey from 1860 San Francisco to Japan. While following the trail of the lost Princess Alyss, Hatter Madigan finds himself mixed up with an enigmatic street waif named Nekko, who might be more than she appears. While tracking a samurai sword with a connection to Wonderland, Hatter finds himself being tutored in the art of Zen by Nekko as they traverse the Pacific Ocean. In Japan, he meets up with Hatter Dalton but the two find their paths, while shared for a while, have vastly different destinations. The storyline of Zen of Wonder is just as engaging as the rest of the Hatter M series, but the authors decide to have a little more fun this time around with some nods to Eastern graphic novels. Chapter Three reads just like one of my favorite types of manga, even if Sami Makkonen's artwork is on the opposite end of the spectrum. The only issue I had with Zen of Wonder is that when Dalton came in – because of Makkonen's style - I had a very hard time telling the two Hatters apart. Zen of Wonder is a wonderfully unique addition to the Hatter M series. The end definitely leaves the reader wanting more.
