With the wit that has made her other books so much fun Amy Stewart uncovers the fascinating botanical history and the relevant science and chemistry of 160 plants, flowers, trees, fruits and even a few fungi that eventually make their way into a variety of alcoholic drinks. Featuring an attractive, two-color vintage-style page layout that made a few of her other books so much fun to read, this volume not only offers the relevant information the author wishes to convey but also includes tips for gardeners as well as fifty drink recipes that range from margaritas and martinis to Irish Coffee. The book's sections cover a wide range of plants which are arranged in alphabetical order by their common name. There are also special pages devoted to listings of information such as the types of fortified wines, the different types of gin, spirits of the cactus fruit, and a guide to sugarcane spirits. Amy Stewart's light conversational narrative style makes a potentially boring subject very entertaining. Her previous titles include Wicked Bugs, Wicked Plants, an investigation of the commercial flower industry called Flower Confidential, and The Earth Moved.
