Before Victor Hugo moved to the Isle of Jersey, he suffered a loss he could never get beyond. His beloved nineteen year-old daughter drowned. While mourning, he wrote Les Miserables! He also desperately wanted to contact his daughter in the nether world.

He began participating in hundreds of séances. He wrote transcriptions of contact with Plato, Galileo, Shakespeare, Jesus and Lucifer. It was believed his transcriptions of the ensuing conversations had all been published.

Jac L'Etoile, a present day mythologist specializing in Jersey's Celtic roots, discovers that Fantine, a character in Les Miserables, was much on Hugo's mind. The journals that Hugo wrote in chronicling the séances had been missing for many years and Jac is determined to find them to use them in her work.

It's hard to synopsize such an erudite work. It is difficult to avoid getting caught up in the beauty of the words. Seduction by M. J. Rose moves effortlessly from the mid-nineteenth century to today's world. We are treated to Hugo's frame of mind, poor man, and Jac's efforts to find Hugo's journals which might help to prove that there truly is an afterlife with connection to the 21st century.

It's an intriguing novel that will surely make you wonder just what that noise in the night was. Your cat jumping off a windowsill or something rearranging the dishes in your cupboard?
