idden away from the world in a camper in the woods, Carey and her little sister Jenessa only have each other. Their mother, a crystal meth addict, has hidden them to keep them away from their father.
S
he leaves them there alone, stopping by infrequently to bring food. Sometimes she comes on her own but sometimes she brings a man. When she brings a man, Carey is abused to pay for her mother's drug habit. When their mother doesn't bring food, Carey rations what they have and goes hunting with an old shot gun her mother left at the camper.
C
arey has always taken care of her little sister. When she has to protect her, she does that too. Carey's mother has been away a long time and Carey and her sister are down to just a few beans when a man and woman find their campsite. The woman is a social worker and the man is their father. Her mother has told the social worker where to find the camper. Carey can no longer protect herself and Jenessa from their father.
T
he home waiting for them is warm and clean and stocked with enough food to last the girls forever. Carey and Janessa haven't seen other people in a long time. They have a lot to learn about the new world they're in. In time Carey will find out why her mother hid them from their dad.
