Twenty years have passed since then and at best, Breed and humans retain a fragile alliance. The Order, an elite cadre of Breed warriors, still focuses on protecting humans - and their vampire brethren alike - from attack by human rebels. They need all the skilled warriors they can train, so it's no surprise that breed mate Mira has risen to the rank of squad captain. After the devastating loss of her lover Kellan, who'd been lured into a fiery ambush, she's thrown herself into keeping the peace and meting out justice to those of either species who threaten the human/Breed alliance. After one stormy night of passion, Kellan Archer realises that he and Mira could never be together. He abandons the Order but continues the fight by becoming leader of a small band of human rebels. But when a high profile kidnapping throws the pair together again, Mira and Kellan are forced to confront their past and decide whether they'll ever have a future together. After ten books that focussed on the Breed and their internal struggles, Adrian re-energizes her series by introducing this new twist to the mythology. Not only must the Order remain on guard against the continued machinations of their own kind but also the shifting loyalties of humans. The overall storyline involving Mira and Kellan is well done, their romance touching, believable and sizzling. Unfortunately, I found Kellan's character lacking; initially introduced as a minor character, his background was never really expanded upon. His motivation for leaving Mira and the Order also seemed weak and his actions to redeem himself to her sometimes redundant. Overall, though, Edge of Dawn breathes new life into a series whose last few instalments have been somewhat lacklustre. Adrian also adds a long awaited revelation - the origins of Breed mates. This could well overshadow the Breed's unsteady presence within the human world since this powerful new enemy poses a much greater threat.
