Carrie Blair has disappeared just a few days before she was to receive twenty million dollars for being faithful to her husband for the first ten years of their marriage. Seems like a good enough reason for her husband, Horatio Blair, to do her in. When her body is discovered, he is charged with her murder.

Charles Benedict, his lawyer, is called to defend him. But it looks as though Benedict, a brilliant and ruthless defense attorney, is determined to set Blair up for the crime.

As another plot twist, PI Dana Cutler is on the trail of a priceless artifact. She feels the whole thing is a wild-goose chase, but a lot of money is involved. Hard to turn down. Gradually, however, it appears that her unfruitful quest for the artifact and the murder of Carrie Blair are somehow related. The plot thickens. As does the intrigue and suspense.

Author Philip Margolin has written sixteen – count 'em – New York Times bestsellers. His take on crime seems very true to reality. As a criminal defense attorney, he has handled thirty murder cases. So I assume he knows of what he writes. It's a big scary world out there.
