Utilizing a reader friendly format with sidebars and illustrations, this guide will help you find just the right bike for your needs and it contains plenty of tips on maintenance, survival skills for trail riding and peddling on city streets and informative narratives contributed by some well-known biking notables. After a brief history of biking, Coppolillo addresses the various options that one has when purchasing a bike. Of course, once you have selected the right model, you'll want to find the place where you can get the best price. Coppolillo explains the importance of proper fitting which means determining what type of saddle is best, and proper saddle and handlebar height and position, plus the pedal, cleat or shoe positions. Once you have written a check and made the necessary mechanical adjustments, the next concern is how to care for your new bike and protect your investment. Safety is another major concern that any biker must take into account. Besides looking at the necessary safety gear you may want to purchase, you'll find short sections with intriguing titles like Don't Get Doored and How to Handle a Crash. For those drawn towards competitive events, there is a chapter on various types of racing and another on Adventure Cycling that weighs some of the pros and cons of long bike treks. There are more comprehensive and detailed books available on all facets of biking, but the beauty of Holy Spokes! is that the author manages to cram a lot of essential information into just under 200 pages and makes it fun to read.
