This companion book is told by Tori, the teenager who went missing in Ultraviolent. As a result of the investigation into her disappearance, Tori and her family are on the run. A DNA sample of hair taken from her hairbrush while she was missing shows certain abnormalities. The government wants her to come in for testing. The family moves and cuts all ties with everyone they know. They change their appearances and take new names. Tori, now known as Niki, tries to keep a low profile, but fate intervenes. When she is forced to give CPR to a bus driver after a near accident, an obsessed ex-detective, comes a step closer to finding her. The detective, now working for the lab wanting to research her DNA, never really believed her explanation of what happened during the time she was missing. Sebastian Faraday reappears in her life. He needs her engineering expertise. His refusal to get in touch with Alison (a mutual friend who is in love with him) angers Tori. Anderson is an extremely good writer. Ultraviolent's ending tied up all the story's loose ends. I never expected a follow-up. I hate cliffhanger endings that are intended to sell the next book in a series. I don't know whether there'll be a third book, after Quicksilver, but if there is I'll be in line to buy it. The surprise ending will rock you, but the story is complete without a follow-up.
