After losing most of her assets during the economic downturn, former stock broker Sabrina Eckhart has high hopes that the hidden silver mine she's inherited from her eccentric uncle will pay off in a big way, solving her financial woes. First, though, she needs to head out into the vast west Texas desert and find it. She doesn't want to admit she needs help, least of all from arrogant PI Alex Justice. Unfortunately, he has all the right skills to get her to where she needs to go.

Alex doesn't like the fact that he's been attracted to Sabrina from the moment they met; she's not at all his type. Unfortunately, there's a hot attraction smouldering that neither can deny. As long as their arrangement remains all business, there shouldn't be a problem. But when Alex is forced to crash land their hired chopper in the middle of the desert, their situation changes dramatically. Forced to rely on Alex's former fighter pilot training to keep them alive, Sabrina begins to realise he's not as arrongant and annoying as she thought.

Once they're rescued and Sabrina becomes the victim of other accidents, Alex moves heaven and earth to discover who's targeted her. The sooner the better; he's not one who falls into permanent relationships despite the fact that they've become lovers. But as her enemies circle and both of them become targets, keeping their distance is the last thing they're able to do.

Against the Odds is another competent instalment in Martin's ongoing series in which the heroes are high-octane alpha and the women independent, no nonsense, yet vulnerable to the trouble that's come their way. Martin keeps what could have been a rather clichéd plot interesting and even manages to pull off a nice plot twist by the story's end, which makes Against the Odds a quick, entertaining and overall satisfying read.
