I
n book two of this spin off series of Ellison's well received Detective Taylor Jackson series, former Nashville coroner Samantha Owens is still coming to grips with the loss of her family, even while carefully kindling a new relationship with ex-army Ranger Xander Whitfield, whose own past is also filled with heart break.
A
s Samantha's new story opens, a terrorist attack on a D.C. subway line leaves three people dead (a politician, a scientist and a student) and many others hospitalized. As a new instructor at Georgetown University's forensic pathology department, Sam's
outside the box
way of investigating has her digging into not only the origins of the mysterious pathogen, but also a possible relationship between the three victims.
H
er quest takes her from Washington to Colorado, where Xander and his family reveal disturbing links to those who might be responsible for the attack. Determined to unravel the frustrating mystery, she, Xander and the D.C. police race against time to uncover the truth and stop a killer before he strikes again.
Y
ou don't necessarily need to read the first in this new series (
A Deeper Darkness
), or even the Taylor Jackson series to find yourself absorbed in Sam's life as she and Xander try to stop a killer - and take the next careful steps into their relationship. Ellison keeps readers guessing with great pacing, a nicely layered mystery and as always, characters you'll care about.
