To her surprise, sixteen-year-old Billie Paradise unexpectedly inherits her grandmother's house in Seaton, Cornwall. Billie has never met her grandmother. Eleanor Trevelyan is her mum's mother and the house is called Cliff House.

Her mum calls the inheritance serendipity and doesn't seem bothered that Billie is inheriting the house she grew up in instead of her. She hasn't been back to the little town on the sea since she became pregnant with Billie. Now Eleanor Trevelyan has a grandson, Billie's brother Finn.

With Finn's dad, Luka, on tour with his band for the next three months her mum is depressed and getting worse every day. She decides they could stand a new start so suggests they pack up and head out to Seaton.

Billie's not thrilled about relocating. She suggests that they sell the house, but Finn and her mother are excited about the move. When they arrive in Seaton, Billie realizes that her mother's life in Cliff House was very different from Billie's and Finn's. As secrets begin to surface, Billie wonders who was the better mother, Eleanor Trevelyan or her own mum.
