That is what happens to eleven-year-old Julia, who lives in a California suburb. Waking up with her family one Saturday morning, Julia learns that the earth's rotation is slowing down, which will certainly result in some pretty intense situations. First of all, it will make days and nights longer, which will mess with time, gravity and everyday life. It will also cause chaos in the environment, affecting plants and wildlife - the food sources upon which human life depends. On top of all this Julia also faces the growing pains of life. She is not the most popular kid in school, lacks friends, and has a crush on a boy named Seth, who has no idea she is alive. With the world steadily changing, just trying to fit in becomes very hard to deal with. When I picked up this novel, I was not expecting the impact it would have on me. This author ties the end of the world in with the coming of age of a teenaged girl, and makes it all very real. I did not put the book down, reading into the wee hours of the morning to finish it. Karen Thompson Walker has a great imagination and her storytelling is dramatic, with compassion interweaved throughout. The Age of Miracles is an excellent novel.
