They headed to Nicaragua to join the Sandinistas. They did not realize how unprepared they were for what was happening in Central America in 1987. They found themselves jobless, running out of money, and virtually unwanted. Deb also discovered that love wasn't all it was cracked up to be, even when George proposed on the side of the road in El Salvador. A revolution is a harsh reality for self discovery. This journey in the author's life left a mark so unforgettable that she ended up going back many years later to make sense of it all. This is a witty, humorous, neatly written memoir about youth, love, war and coming of age with a twist. It's an eye opener on a fantastical journey, which makes you believe you are right beside her the whole way. I love her honesty and straightforward description of the trip.
