Hannah Manning, a journalist and war correspondent is suffering from severe brain trauma from an LED bomb explosion in Afghanistan. Unable to read or concentrate, full of pain, lost and confused and haunted by her memories, she is recuperating at her sister and brother-in-law's farm in Prince Edward County, Ontario.

Feeling as though she is a burden to her hard-working relatives, she tries to be of use. But her recovery will take more time than she wishes. A disfigured Afghan woman, staying at the next farm, lost her family because of the war and had no where to go. She arrived at the farm and kept to herself.

When the woman is found murdered, suspicion turns toward Hannah. She must fight the allegations, all while she struggles to regain her abilities to live on her own and earn a living once again.

Hannah feels a presence when she enters the root cellar and we are treated to the period of time when the first Loyalist settlers arrived in Ontario, fleeing the United States in 1784. A period of history that I'm not too familiar with. It's interesting background as is the woman who leaves behind a journal of the hard times the settlers encountered.

In addition to the mystery, More than Sorrow by Vicki Delany also delves into the suffering of soldiers returning from Afghanistan who were inflicted with grievous wounds. They need more help than they are getting.
