Sheriff of Picketville, Virginia, Ike Schwartz and Ruth Dennis, President of a local university, need some peace and quiet time for Ruth to completely recover from an horrific automobile accident. They set their sights on Scone Island, a small bit of land off the rocky coast of Maine. Ruth owns a small cottage there. It should be remote enough that no one can find them. Think again!
Someone, before they arrived, plunged off a steep cliff, which shouldn’t have affected Ike nor Ruth except – Ike had been a CIA agent prior to his post as Sheriff. He is again roped into CIA activities. Also, it appears that both he and Ruth are possible targets of whomever murdered the cliff diver.
Scone Island by Frederick Ramsey is full of action with some great repartee between Ike and Ruth. Engaged with no wedding date set as yet. The final scene is totally unexpected but thrilling nonetheless.
Ramsey has used his writing to express his dismay at our country seemingly rushing to war. He explains that since our Revolution, we have been at war somewhere in the world except for the years between WWI and WWII!! What a history that is. Surely we can do better than sending great gobs of money to the rest of the world while our returning soldiers are struggling to re-enter their world with little help from the government. I agree with Ramsey’s musings.
