To make matters worse, mere weeks after his death she discovers she's pregnant. At first, she's thrilled that her baby will be a reminder of the man she loved. But within weeks, doctors discover that baby Justin is battling a rare immune deficiency. Only a bone marrow transplant from his father can save his life. But Paul is supposedly dead and time is running out - until a colleague of Amanda's sends her a picture of a man who's the spitting image of Paul. Amanda is thrilled, then furious. Had Paul simply walked out on her without a backward glance? Determined to track him down if only to save their son, she hires Forensic Instincts, a privately funded group of individuals that includes a former SEAL, an FBI agent, a computer whiz, a clairvoyant and a tracking hound to name but a few. Since the inception of their company, they've always solved their very high profile cases. Amanda is confident they will save Justin as well. As the team investigates, they begin unraveling wheelings and dealings that include the mob, murky real estate deals, and secrets concerning Paul that go to the highest levels within Washington D.C. But they aren't about to turn tail and run - not when the life of an innocent child is at stake. Kane has written a competent story here, with nice pacing, given the critical time line to save baby Justin, but overall The Line Between Here and Gone storyline is a pretty generic blend, including the sick baby twist. I really couldn't get a true feel for the Forensic Instincts team either - this is my first foray into their world and Kane's fast-paced, bare bones storyline didn't allow for much back-story from previous instalments.
