A
boy with a unique ability. A town full of secrets. A star-crossed loved story. These are the components that make up Scott Tracey's debut novel, Witch Eyes.
A
ll his life, Braden has lived alone with his uncle, learning magic instead of traditional academics. See, Braden has a unique trait – one he calls
witch eyes
– which lets him see all the spells ever worked in a location. However, this ability comes with a price: migraines. To avoid them, Braden must keep his sunglasses on, which makes him stand out even more.
H
is visions always show him the past, but one day he has one that shows the future. Fearing for what he saw in the vision, he runs away to the town he was born in, Belle Dam, where he learns that his father is one of the top two witches vying for control of the town. Braden wants to stay out of the fight ... but that is kind of hard when he falls for the other witch's son.
T
racey has come up with a unique take on witches and town planning. The world he has built is really imaginative. His characters are very memorable and realistic, even those who have special powers. It was wonderful that his main character was gay but the story had other focuses. Some of the plot did seem a little rushed or too easily resolved, but that is not uncommon with YA novels.
I
f you are looking for a unique YA paranormal,
Witch Eyes
is definitely worth the read. I am excited to see where Scott Tracey takes the story in the sequel,
Demon Eyes
.
