James 'Whitey' Bulger was considered a hero in South Boston. He led the Winter Hill Gang while protecting his neighborhood and its residents. He reigned from 1979 to 1994.

However, he was a criminal in every sense of the word. He created his own world through extortion and intimidation and has been accused of murdering nineteen people.

The worst part of this whole story is that the FBI aided and abetted his criminal pursuits because of Whitey's agreeing to be a snitch or informant. So in all those years, no police force was able to bring him to trial. He and his cohorts seemed to live life as they wanted and the FBI just turned their heads.

At least, that is what is written by Thomas J. Foley in his rendering of the Whitey Bulger story in Most Wanted. Col. Thomas J. Foley is a former head of the Massachusetts State Police. He spent twenty years pursuing Bulger and was never able to get close enough to put handcuffs on the man.

The tale of those twenty years speaks of determination and dedication to carry out his job, as well as empathy for the families of those killed who never knew what happened to their loved ones. He wanted to bring closure for them as they too were victims of Bulger's crimes.

Most Wanted is a year-by-year account of Bulger's crimes as well as those of others connected to him. It is riveting and frightening when one considers that this book is non-fiction. Thank you, Mr. Foley, for your hard work.
