And though I somehow managed to miss the fourth and fifth books, The Necromancer and The Warlock, I was still able to catch up and enjoy this episode, which is as filled with action, magic and figures out of legend as the earlier adventures. The end is near for immortal alchemyst Nicholas Flamel and his sorceress wife Perenelle. The tensions that have pulled readers through the series - the Flamels' race against accelerating aging, as well as the siblings' race to gain all their powers in time to save the world, and their growing distrust of their mentors - continue to build. One story thread follows the twins, Virginia Dare and John Dee as they journey back in time to the Isle of Danu Talis. There the siblings meet their parents once more, though the latter seem changed and insist that their offspring are about to meet their destiny, to save worlds. Sophie and Josh see much that disturbs them in Danu Talis. Dee advises Josh to follow his heart. And another group of heroes also heads to Danu Talis for their own adventures. In San Francisco, the Flamels seek allies (some of whom were once enemies) and face monsters for the last time. Nicholas tells his wife, 'I think it is time we reminded these Dark Elders why they once feared us.' They attack the island of Alcatraz. There's plenty of action on many fronts before the twins do fulfill their destiny, 'One to save the world, one to destroy it.' And one of them pays a terrible price. Reading earlier episodes, it was hard to imagine how Michael Scott would end this series, but he's done a fine job in writing a fitting, and satisfying, conclusion.
