The Unseen by Katherine Webb tells a tangled story of four people who become enmeshed in each others' lives. It is 1911 in a Berkshire village in England. We meet the Reverend Albert Canning and his na´ve wife Hester. Cat comes on the scene as their new maid who is rumored to have a past touched by the law. And we mustn't forget the catalyst, Robin Durrant, a leading member of those interested in the occult, who believes Canning's reports of elemental beings in the water meadows nearby.

While everyone else calls these beings fairies, Durrant determines that this will be his ticket to fame and riches. He wheedles his way into the Cannings' home and proceeds to take over. Ambition rules his life. Cat, meanwhile, tries to determine how she will make her escape from servitude to return to London. She has no one but herself but is quite capable of running her own life given a chance. Could love intervene with her plans?

The reason for Cat's brush with the law will surprise you as will the treatment she received while in prison. Emotions are running high; everyone involved has their own agenda in this fanciful plot that truly works - and proves to us that everything is not what it seems.
