Into the Dreaming: (with bonus material)    by Karen Marie Moning Order:  USA  Can Delacorte, 2012 (2012) Hardcover, CD, e-Book     Reviewed by Hilary Williamson This book is misleading, as it looks like a full novel but actually includes several smaller pieces: the Into the Dreaming novella (a little over a hundred pages); a story proposal for Ghost of a Chance; deleted scenes from Kiss of the Highlander; The Dark Highlander Lite (a discarded beginning of The Dark Highlander); and excerpts from Darkfever and the graphic novel Fever Moon. Into the Dreaming tells the story of Aedan MacKinnon, the son of a Highland chieftain, tricked by the Unseelie king into a hellish five hundred year's imprisonment in 'the land of shadow and ice.' When the Seelie queen learns of his hard fate, she decides to intervene. At the end of Aedan's sentence, he is to 'be granted one full cycle of the moon in the mortal world'. If, in that time, 'he is loved and loves in return, he will be free.' Otherwise he must continue to serve as the dark lord's Hand of Vengeance. The queen arranges for Aedan and his 'one true mate' to meet in the Dreaming - 'that elusive, much-sought, everforgotten realm where mortals occasionally brushed pale shoulder to iridescent wing with the fairy' - long before their encounter in the mortal realm. Fast forward to present day Indiana where Jane Sillee receives regular rejection letters and dreams of a 'sexy, dark-haired Highlander.' She receives an unexpected delivery - an exquisite tapestry that sweeps her into the past, to 1428 on the Isle of Skye. Of course you know where this is going, but it's the journey, the feisty heroine and damaged hero that make for reading pleasure. It's tons of fun too as Jane uses her own purple prose to entice and awaken the man of her dreams. And she finally achieves her goal of becoming 'a storyteller with an eager audience'. Though I enjoyed the well-written novella, I'd only recommend the entire book to serious fans of this bestselling author, who will appreciate all the background information and excerpts of what's ahead.
