offers scores of color photos tracing the development of this workhorse of the rail industry. Electro-Motive and General Electic have developed locomotives of ever greater speeds and power in recent years, thus allowing railroads to deliver products and raw materials faster and cheaper. This collection of photos with detailed captions focuses on the most significant, high-horsepower diesels. You'll find examples of everything from EMD SDs and GPs to GE Dash 9s and low-emission Evolutions.
S
olomon doesn't forget the other end of the engine spectrum and also includes switching locomotives and passenger power as well. The locomotives are pictured in various locations in both the United States and Canada and they represent most of the key railroads.
'
This book focuses on successful new locomotive designs introduced since 1980, with an emphasis on types built since the advent of microprocessor controls,
' writes Solomon. '
Although a great variety of models in operation on North American railroads are depicted, this book is not intended as a comprehensive identification guide.
'
T
hat being said, this is still a splendid, inexpensive collection of photos that any rail fan will read from cover to cover before adding to his or her library.
