That's all it takes to set in motion an episode involving a peeping Tom, several murders, and a mind in turmoil with guilt and grief. Against her better judgment, Katrina Burton picks up a hitchhiker on a stormy night as she drives to her new home in Leavenworth, Washington. She and her dog Bandit braved the storm to reach her rental home, hoping to leave her heartbreak behind. Her fiancé Shawn had died. With her parents gone years before, she knew she needed a new challenge to keep her life on course. The hitchhiker, Zack, worries her. His attitude is off key. All she wants is to get him out of her car. She drops him off with the little white lie – the beginning of a nightmare – that she has a cabin on the mountainside; she pretends to turn into it. The next day, she meets Zack again. He's a teacher in the very school where her new life is to begin. Zack knows she lied and coerces her into throwing a party at that fictional cabin in the woods. In the meantime, she meets a man she can allow herself to love. Jack could fill the void that Shawn left. But things start to go wrong, fast. Too fast to comprehend. I won't reveal any more of the excellent plot. I couldn't see where the story was going at first. Then, as it unraveled, I couldn't see where and how it would end. White Lies is well worth a read.
