The Next One to Fall follows The Damage Done as the second in Hilary Davidson's mystery series, starring travel writer Lily Moore. Her drug addicted sister Claudia died in the first novel, and Lily is still devastated by her loss.

As this second episode opens, Lily's gay friend Jesse has convinced her to join him on a trip to Peru, hoping the holiday will pull her out of her grief and guilt over not being there for her sister. Unfortunately, Lily witnesses a death at Machu Picchu. Before she dies (after a fall, or was she pushed?) Trista Deen accuses Len of making her drink something and then pushing her down the stairs. She claims that his 'daddy's money' makes Len untouchable.

Since Trista was a drug addict (as is Len), local police are quick to rule her death an accident, but Lily (motivated by her guilt over her junkie sister's death) is determined to find out more. She's alarmed to discover that Trista is the third woman involved with Len Wolven who has died or disappeared. Her quest to uncover the truth propels Lily and Jesse into a series of violent encounters with sinister characters - there's bribery, attempted suicide, a kidnapping, and more than one shooting.

Though I enjoyed reading The Next One to Fall for its descriptions of Peru rather than for the somewhat unlikely mystery, it's always fun to spend time with Lily Moore and her best friend, Jesse. If you like your whodunits in exotic locales, then pick this one up.
