Her grandmother left the city and made a home for Trinity in Colorado after her parents died. Now Trinity lives with her aunt Sara. Shattered Dreams opens as Trinity joins schoolmates at a deserted mansion that is supposedly haunted. She knows what this is about. Annoyed that her boyfriend Chase is Trinity's lab partner, head cheerleader Jessica has set the outing up to establish her claim to Chase and to scare the new girl away. The house immediately feels wrong to Trinity, and in one room she has a vision - of a girl lying 'limp as a rag doll' on a bloody mattress. Then Jessica plays a cruel trick on Trinity, that results in Chase's breaking up with her. The next day, Jessica disappears, and Trinity is convinced that the vision she had is a true one. Though she tells the police what she has seen, they suspect her, based on the flare-up at the mansion. Jessica's friends at school also accuse Trinity, especially after she and Chase become close. Confiding in Aunt Sara, Trinity learns that her mother and grandmother had the same true visions, which they viewed as a responsibility. So, despite the distrust all around her, Trinity uses her ability to seek clues to Jessica's location. Along the way, she meets Jim Fourcade, a cop who was a friend of her mother's, and his protective silver-eyed son Dylan, who seems to turn up whenever Trinity's in need of help. Struggling to differentiate waking dreams and reality, Trinity races against time to save Jessica. Shattered Dreams makes a gripping start to this exciting Midnight Dragonfly series, and I look forward to seeing where Ellie James takes it - and the Trinity/Chase/Dylan love triangle - next.
