The Beaters are starting to work together to get their rewards of human flesh. Eventually they will learn how to swim across the river and these zombie-like humans will infect the small community of Eden. If this happens all will be lost. So the Eden survivors, including Cass Dollar, decide to pack up and seek another shelter.

As Cass and other Edenites venture forth, a small band of men come to their rescue as they struggle against Beaters. These men tell them of a shelter up north, where Beaters cannot survive the cold. There civilization could begin anew. Though this offer brings hope to the survivors, Cass has a bad feeling about it - something is not right about these men and their good news.

Cass is torn between two men. Smoke left her on a personal mission even after she begged him to stay. And then there is Dor. Fate seems to be pushing them together, but her guilt is tearing them apart. She also fights her own demons, knowing that she was a Beater once, and that she is drinking again. She needs to get it together before it's too late.

What a wild, imaginative, and well written story. It's like reading a zombie movie, instead of watching, with a lot more depth in the characters. Descriptions of the battles are graphic. The author is also very insightful in portraying a small community trying to survive the harsh realities of a post-apocalyptic world and showing what a sliver of hope can do to the human soul.
