Riley's teacher dad became a demon trapper to pay the medical bills when his wife died, and Riley signed on as an apprentice (with Harper, the toughest master around) against his wishes. In the first episode, Riley's father was killed by a Grade Five demon, and his corpse stolen (necromancers reanimate the dead and enslave them for a year's service). Her father's bad boy apprentice Denver Beck, helped Riley develop her demon trapping skills. In addition to Beck (who hides his attraction to Riley for her own good), she dates religious trapper Simon Adler while mysterious, gorgeous Lancer (freelance demon hunter) Ori keeps popping out of nowhere. Also in Riley's life is her best friend, her schoolmate Peter. The first book ended on a cliffhanger, with many trappers injured or killed. Riley saved Simon's life by making a deal with Heaven 'to keep the world from ending.' But now that he's recovering, Simon is suspicious of Riley's role in the disaster and accuses her of working with Lucifer. As this develops, Riley seeks her father, Beck becomes close to freelance journalist Justine Armando, and Vatican demon hunters (who have little concern for collateral damage) arrive in town and seem to pick Riley as the perfect scapegoat. Though Ori tells Riley he's her only hope, he asks too much of her and she recoils. Having made a deal with Heaven, she's forced to make another with the Prince of Hell. Soul Thief ends with Riley in deep trouble - and for those anxious for more, there's a sneak peek at the next episode at the back of this one.
