Soon he finds himself on the front step of a mansion called the Darby-Jones, a boarding house run by the woman mentioned in the postcard, Mona. The boarding house is in a quaint little town called Ruby Falls, where he finds more than he bargained for. Mona Jones owns the boarding house and is surprised by her new guest, who is despondent, strange and seems to like to keep to himself. When he finds a photograph, he ends up having a slight accident on the stairs and Mona becomes his caregiver, a role that suits her. But Mona's daughter Onieda is beside herself with anger and has trouble coping with the whole situation. As the three of them get to know each other, secrets come out, which challenge their ideas about friendship, love and what family is really about. This Must Be the Place is a very charming and sweet book, about life choices and how they determine the future. It touches base on teenage rebellion and the relationship between a mother and daughter whose love is bittersweet. It also portays the grief of a man over the loss of his wife and how he heals piece by piece. I found the novel very well written and very easy to read, and felt connected to the realistic characters.
