ora McFarland's
Hot, Shot, and Bothered
is a great read. It offers wonderful humor, a good mystery, believable characters, a good plot, tension, an exciting ending, and a glimpse behind the lines of firefighters who battle forest fires.
L
ily Hawkins is a
shooter
, a cameraperson for a local TV station. Her other half, Rod, works behind the scenes but is noted as an excellent reporter in front of the camera.
O
n a routine shoot at a ballooning forest fire in the Cascades, Lily happens on a body being pulled from a lake. Finding out that the corpse was that of Jessica Egan whom she knew thirteen years ago, Lily is filled with remorse.
L
ily was wild in her early years and Jessica helped her out of trouble at that time. Deciding she has to discover what happened to Jessica, a determined Lily investigates in conjunction with filming the fire. Rod joins in reluctantly, but begs her to cease and desist before she becomes a lifeless body also.
O
f course, our Lily finds that she just cannot stop and, feeling she can still do her job justice, falls into situations she would rather not be in. Like being shot at in the middle of flaming trees. Or facing a wild cougar. Or in a perilous situation where the fire might not be as bad as what's facing her.
