livia Bennett has created a series that all girls who are interested in fashion will devour.
The Allegra Biscotti Collection
is one of the cutest contemporary middle grade series I have come across. The second book,
Who What Wear
, is just a delightful as the first.
E
mma Rose has a ginormous secret: she is up-and-coming fashion designer Allegra Biscotti. Very few people know the truth, just her family, her dad's receptionist, the senior fashion editor at Madison who discovered her, and Charlie, one of her two best friends. That is where Emma's biggest problem lies – keeping her promise to Paige, the editor at Madison, Emma never told Holly, especially since Holly seems to be telling everything to her new friend Ivana, with whom she spends almost all her time. But Emma has other things to worry about, like creating a new collection for a weekend-only pop-up store hosted by Madison, and her first commissioned piece, a Sweet 16 dress for the most popular girl at her school. Emma is so busy, it is now she who has no time for Holly.

Who What Wear
, Bennett takes the typical middle grade themes of fights between friends and dealing with the mean, popular girl and puts a spin on them as fresh as Allegra Biscotti's newest collection. While the concept of Emma's landing her dream job while still only in eighth grade is unrealistic, Emma herself is very true to the early teen girls I know. She is slowly becoming aware of how the real world works and how friendships and people can change over time. And as everyone has their own release from the stress of real life, Emma's is fashion and creating new ideas in her sketch book, which is wonderfully represented throughout in fun two-toned illustrations by artist Georgia Rucker.
