Over the course of many centuries, Breed vampire Dragos unleashes a meticulous plan to subjugate humans and ultimately conquer the planet. However, the Order (formed by fellow vampires who do not share Dragos's single-minded vision) has thwarted him at every turn. In an effort to neutralize the Order once and for all, Dragos's scientists have created an army of unstoppable GenOne assassins. Only one of these lethal killers has ever escaped his handlers. Hunter is now sworn to the Order - and to his diabolical creators' destruction.

As this episode opens, Hunter has been tasked to return Corinne Bishop to Darkhaven. For the past seventy-five years, she and countless other Breedmates, have been held captive for the sole purpose of breeding an army of GenOne warriors. Unfortunately, her happy family reunion brings heartache and betrayal - and a shocking revelation that could well annihilate the Order.

While the Order's warriors scramble to avert catastrophe, Hunter and Corinne travel to New Orleans to follow a new tip that could finally lead them to Dragos's lair. As they begin to learn more about each other, Corinne realises that he has suffered as much or more at a megalomaniac's hands. If not for the birth of her son, she admits she might have let Dragos destroy her. She is determined to find her son, and with Hunter's help (and love), free him from the dark fate that awaits a GenOne assassin.

Hunter has been a fascinating secondary character since his introduction in Veil of Midnight. Over the course of the last four books, his acceptance by, and interaction with, the Breed warriors and their mates has begun to fracture the assassin's iron self-control, thus allowing him to observe and rediscover emotion.

Despite Adrian's continued exploration of numerous plot threads which lead to a game-changing and surprising ending, she still manages to create a convincing and touching love story between the damaged Corinne and Hunter. Deeper Than Midnight rates high as one of the best instalments of the series, a true page-turner that will undoubtedly prompt a new wave of paranormal romance fans to explore the dark and passionate world of the Midnight Breed.
