The day has come for Linda and Dan Davis to say good-bye to their daughter Molly as she heads east to a prestigious private college. Linda is both excited and sad; her daughter's hard work has earned her this scholarship and she is setting forth on an adventure neither of her parents had been able to achieve. They're so proud of Molly, but will of course miss their only child dreadfully. That is if they can convince her not to throw it all away for her high school sweetheart, who doesn't want Molly to go.

Eventually Molly comes to her senses and she and Linda begin their cross-country road trip. As they pass the long days on the road and nights in motels, Linda decides to finish the quilt she'd started long ago for Molly. As Linda stitches, she realises it represents not only a time capsule into Molly's life, but also the choices she and Dan made over the years.

Susan Wiggs always writes emotionally rich stories and The Goodbye Quilt, while much shorter and less involved that what the author usually writes, is no exception. This love story doesn't involve a man and woman, but rather the special bond between a mother and daughter, and how that bond is tested when the young fledgling comes of age, spreads her wings, and leaves the nest to follow her own path. Mothers in particular should make sure to have a hanky close by while reading this warm and thought provoking story.
