Anila's Journey    by Mary Finn Order:  USA  Can Walker, 2008 (2008) Paperback      Reviewed by Barbara Lingens Mary Finn has written a gentle account of a young Indian girl who, though without parents, is able to successfully make her way in the 18th-century world of Calcutta. Born of a beautiful Indian mother and a British father who is called back to his home in England, Anila is determined to be reunited with her father. Having lost her mother, she is lucky enough to find a British couple who befriend her. When they have to leave Calcutta she resolves not to accompany them because how will her father find her? This leads to her employment as a bird artist for a scholar researching avian life on the Ganges. While Anila's adventure unfolds we are treated to a vivid description of the country, its people and customs and the British who were posted there.
