All their grown children accept their reunion except for Connor, their youngest. Connor's career as a high powered divorce attorney has left him jaded about marriage, and he has unresolved issues with his mother since she walked away from her marriage and children when they were young. The family has just recently learned that Connor has been living with Heather Donovan in Baltimore and they have a young son together. Heather knew Connor did not believe in marriage, but after moving in with him and giving birth to his son, she hoped he would change. Connor believes they can have a happy life together without marriage and the rings that symbolize it, but Heather wants more. Heather moves out and relocates to Chesapeake Shores where she opens a quilt shop next to Megan's art gallery. Heather and young Mick will be living in the apartment above the shop, and she feels she will get support from the O'Brien family. Connor is not happy about the move, but Heather is enjoying her business and her independence. She has made new friends and has been embraced by the family. Connor loves Heather but feels marriage will lead to heartache. The O'Briens are a large, loving family and they offer advice even if it is not asked for. They manipulate and meddle with Connor and Heather's life, trying to bring the two back together. When Heather is in an accident and is fighting for her life, Connor is forced to think of the possibility of a world without her. He searches his soul and agonizes over his beliefs and his career. Driftwood Cottage is the fifth book in the Chesapeake Shores series. The O'Brien family is back in full force, focusing all their love and attention on Connor and Heather. It is a feel good story about love, family, and what matters most in life.
