Eighteen-year-old Miriam, whose parents are both theology professors, isn't religious, although she is a believer. When she and her twin brother Mo each have visits from angels at the same time on their separate college campuses, Miriam is forced to begin to question her spirituality.

Miriam's visit is from the archangel Raphael. He speaks to her in ancient Hebrew. She translates Raphael's message and finds he wants her to save a girl in another dormitory. She's not sure why she must save her or what she'll be saving her from. Puzzled, she waits too long to get the girl to safety and she is injured. Afterwards she gives in to depression, drops her classes and finally leaves college.

Before she leaves school, Mo visits. He tells her he too was visited by an angel. His angel was Satan. Mo accomplishes what he is told to do and although no one dies, someone is framed for cheating and kicked out of college. While Miriam is depressed, Mo is energized and happy. He doesn't seem to mind that his actions hurt someone he didn't even know.

Kindred is told in first person by Miriam, as she copes with adulthood, a move to a small town in Tennessee, a new job as a reporter, chronic illness and more sightings of angels. All while she questions faith and belief, good and evil, and Mo.
