For the first twelve years of her life Lacey's aunt Linda lives there too. Her aunt takes care of them both, but in one of her bouts of paranoia, her mother demands that Aunt Linda move out. Since the house belongs to her mother, Aunt Linda has no choice but to leave. Her mother still talks to her dead daddy. He tells her things to do, such as making Linda leave. Now Lacey has to take care of her mother alone. When school ends for the summer, her mother seems well enough that Lacey thinks it might be good for her to work. They need money badly. Lacey finds her a job at Winn Dixie and she takes a volunteer job at the library. Lacey dares to hope that things might be normal now. Together they set out on the bus for their first day at their new jobs. After her time at the library, Lacey returns on the bus to the Winn Dixie. Her mother should be at the bus stop, but she's run away again. Dark and suspenseful, Miles From Ordinary takes on the issue of mental illness and how it affects a family.
