ilitary historians and anyone interested in the exploits of the 82nd Airborne Division during the Second World War will want to own a copy of this book. With thirty maps and over 400 black and white photos, this volume captures the division's bloody engagements in Sicily, Italy, France, Belgium and Germany during the later stages of the war.
E
ach of the thirty-six chapters is introduced with a
battlefield
quote ('
Sir, They're All Dead
', '
This Was One of the Toughest Days of My Life
', '
Retreat Hell! – Send Me My Third Battalion
') followed by a brief page or two narrative. Sometimes a map is included before the photos which illustrate the section. The only other text you'll find are the extended tag lines describing each scene.
A
dmittedly some of what you'll see here is rather gut-wrenching. The photos of dead German and American soldiers, burned out vehicles and totally destroyed villages may be hard for veterans as well as non-combatants to take perhaps, but this is not a sanitized picture of war.
T
he 82nd Airborne served more than 300 days in combat, a record unmatched by any other American division. This history begins with the soldiers' training in the United States, followed by their deployment in Europe and then their occupation duty in Berlin at the war's end.
